1 million Vipps tappers

More than 1 million Vipps users have now activated their bank card for mobile tap payments. And this summer, they’ll be able to tap with Vipps not only in Norway – but all over the world.

Vipps MobilePay launched mobile tap payments in Norway on 9 December last year. Since then, an average of 6,800 Norwegians have activated tap with Vipps every single day. Vipps MobilePay CEO Rune Garborg is pleased with how quickly the 1 million mark was reached. He believes it's only a matter of time before mobile payments surpass physical bank cards.

Vipps MobilePay management
Holding your phone next to a payment terminal to pay has quickly become a new habit. Most people still use physical bank cards, but it’s the younger generations who are leading the shift – so the mobile share will keep growing

Tapping peaks at lunchtime
Vipps data shows that tap activity peaks between 11:00 and 12:00, and that Fridays are the most tap-happy day of the week. People in cities tap the most, but this isn’t just for the young: more than 500 users over the age of 90 have already activated tap with Vipps.

Half of all users choose the shortcut – a double-click of the side button, while the rest open the app to tap.

Tap anywhere in the world
Tap with Vipps launched as the world’s first digital wallet to compete directly with Apple’s own wallet on iPhone – with Norwegian BankAxept as the first available payment method. This summer, it will also be possible to add international cards such as VISA and Mastercard.

“That means you’ll be able to tap with Vipps on any terminal across Norway – and the rest of the world. You can safely leave your wallet at home, whether you're heading to Vennesla in Norway, or Venice or Vancouver,” says Garborg.

In addition to paying in shops, cafés and restaurants in Norway, you can also use Vipps at flea markets, football tournaments, and farm stands with a Vipps number – places where card terminals often aren’t available.

If you’ve activated Tap with Vipps on your phone, you can pay in far more places than with a card alone. So far, users have added 200,000 loyalty cards in the app – making tapping even more useful.

“It’s fantastic to see how quickly people are adopting this. Vipps is here to make payments super simple – and clearly, that’s something people really appreciate,” says Garborg.
