Vipps and MobilePay Launch a Seamless Nordic Payment Solution

Vipps MobilePay now makes it easier than ever for users to pay with the app in stores, markets, and other outlets across the Nordics.

With the new cross-border payment solution, Swedes, Danes, Finns, and Norwegians can use Vipps or MobilePay when shopping in other Nordic countries – just like they do at home.

CEO Rune Garborg considers this a significant milestone for the company.

We aim to make the Nordics feel smaller by simplifying as many payment situations as possible. In June 2024, we enabled person-to-person payments between users in Norway, Denmark, and Finland. By September, Vipps was available for Swedish users. Now, we’re taking the next big step – allowing Vipps and MobilePay users to pay in stores across the Nordics.

This is great news for both businesses and tourists, especially in popular travel destinations. With Vipps and MobilePay, merchants no longer have to turn away customers just because they can’t use local payment methods like Vipps or MobilePay numbers.

When you pay in another Nordic country, the transaction is processed in the local currency, and the exchange rate is set by your bank. For users, paying abroad is completely free of charge. But just like with your normal card, your bank may add a small fee when paying in currencies other than your own.

Haavard Melby, Product Manager at Vipps MobilePay, highlights the impact of this solution:
