Vipps MobilePay becomes Vipps across the Nordics

From January, MobilePay will change its name to Vipps in Denmark, Finland and Greenland. This will bring close to 13 million Nordic users together under one shared brand.

Norwegian Vipps and Danish MobilePay joined forces in 2022. Since then, the company has brought its technology and products together in one shared app.

The transition to one shared Nordic brand will happen gradually. From 6 October, the MobilePay app in Denmark and Finland will feature the Vipps smile as its new app icon, while the MobilePay name will remain until 12 January.

Stronger together “Since the merger, we have been one company with one shared app, but with two different names. Now we are taking the final step. Whether you're paying in Copenhagen, Helsinki, Stockholm or Oslo, Vipps will be the name to look for,” says Rune Garborg, CEO of Vipps MobilePay.

In Denmark and Finland, the app will retain MobilePay’s familiar blue colour, while it will remain orange in Norway and Sweden.

The merger has given Vipps MobilePay close to 13 million users and the scale to develop new products for users across the Nordics.

“Vipps and MobilePay has become much stronger together. We compete with the world's biggest technology companies, with enormous resources behind them. Scale matters. If we want to build one strong Nordic player, it makes sense to bring everything together under one name,” says Garborg.

A name that became a verb MobilePay has 4.8 million users in Denmark and 3 million in Finland. Since its launch in Denmark in 2013, it has become a deeply established part of everyday life, so much so that Danes have even turned MobilePay into a verb.

“We know how strong the MobilePay name is, particularly in Denmark and Finland, and we have enormous respect for the brand that has been built. It’s not a name we are letting go of lightly. But if we want to build one Nordic brand, we cannot continue with two names for the same app,” says Garborg.

The name change takes effect on 12 January. Users do not need to take any action, and the app's existing features and functionality will remain the same.
