Vipps MobilePay launches tap to pay across the Nordics

Vipps MobilePay is now live with contactless payments in all its markets – Finland, Sweden, Denmark, and Norway. The Nordic wallet is now enabling users all over the Nordics to make fast, secure, and simple in-store purchases all over the world by simply tapping their phone.
"Today marks a true milestone for Vipps MobilePay. With Tap to Pay across all Nordic countries, we’re giving our users a true, local alternative to the global payment giants. This is the perfect combination of Nordic innovation, collaboration and the freedom to choose how you pay, simply and securely," says Rune Garborg, CEO of Vipps MobilePay.
A new way to pay Starting today, MobilePay users in Finland and Denmark, and Vipps users in Sweden, can use their phones to make contactless payments at payment terminals anywhere Visa and Mastercard are accepted around the world. The feature allows users to select Vipps or MobilePay as their preferred method for in-store payments and complete transactions with just a double-click of their phone’s side button. In Finland, the feature launches first for Danske Bank customers. Once activated in the MobilePay app, users can tap and pay at any payment terminal globally. In Denmark, MobilePay users with Danske Bank and SEB cards can now activate Tap to Pay directly in the app and start using it immediately. In Sweden, Vipps becomes available for both iPhone and Android users, offering a Nordic alternative to other global payment solutions. The first Swedish cards to support contactless payments in Vipps include for example SAS EuroBonus Mastercard, Eurocard and Strawberry Mastercard.
This makes MobilePay the first Nordic payment app to offer full in-store contactless payments for both iPhone and Android users with a range of cards.
“Contactless payments with Vipps have been our goal for several years. We are very proud to launch this feature in all the Nordic countries,” Garborg says. “Competing with global tech giants isn’t easy, but as a Nordic company, we’ve decided to take up the challenge.”
Made possible by EU regulation The introduction of contactless payments within Vipps and MobilePay apps follows the EU Commission’s 2024 decision requiring Apple to open its NFC technology to third-party providers. This has made it possible for companies like Vipps MobilePay to offer users more choice when paying with their phones.
“Tap to Pay is one of the fastest-growing ways to pay in stores, and now all our users in the Nordics have a local, trusted alternative. This is a major step toward our vision of making payments even easier and more unified across borders,” says Garborg.
Vipps MobilePay launched Tap to Pay in Norway in December 2024, becoming the first company in the world to enable payments using Apple’s NFC chip.
